Ever wondered how often you should wash your bedding? Here are a few pointers to help you make that decision.
The approximate time we spend in our beds per week is around 56 to 60 hours. You would want to create comfortable, fresh and clean environment to rest and restore so that you can live your days to the full.
Build ups that can accure between your sheets are as follows:
- Dead skin – we shed around 35 000 dead skin cells every minute from the surface of your skin without you seeing it.
- Dust mites ( micro organisms that you cannot see)
- Dog hair, if your dog sleeps on your bed
- Sweating, especially during summer months
If you suffer from allergies or asthma we definitely recommend washing your sheets once a week with eco friendly, organic washing powder or a home made washing powder. This can help ease the simptoms.
Does this washing sounds like to much? Consider using a flat sheet between yourself and your duvet/blanket. You only have to wash your top sheet, 2 pillowcases and fitted sheet to keep your bedding fresh. Your Duvet Cover and/or blanket you can then wash once a month. This will reduce the size of your washing bundle significantly, save water, electricity and you will have your fresh bedding back on your bed in no time.
So, your bedsheets you should wash ideally once a week, but what about other bedding? Here are a general guideline from the sleepfoundation.
Pillowcases | Once a week |
Duvet covers | Once every 2 weeks to a month |
Comforters | Once every 2-3 months |
Blankets | Once every 2-3 months |
Pillows | Once every 4-6 months (if washable) |
Mattress | Vacuum every 6 months |
